Helmets: the one piece of equipment that is not optional
A surfskate turns much more than a conventional skateboard. The first sessions often involve one or two falls while the reflex to return to center develops. A helmet protects your head during this learning phase.
Finding the right size
Helmet size is based on head circumference: place a tape measure about one centimeter above the eyebrows, around the widest part of the skull. Each product page states the corresponding head circumference. A properly fitted helmet does not move when you shake your head, with the strap open or closed.
A helmet that is too large moves during impact and does not protect properly. One that is too tight will not be worn. If you are between two sizes, most models include interchangeable foam pads to fine-tune the fit.
Half-shell or full-face?
A half-shell covers the skull and is sufficient for cruising, carving and city riding. A full-face helmet with a chin guard is intended for the bowl, large transitions and speed. The standards applicable to each model are listed on its product page.
Helmet FAQ
Should you replace a helmet after a fall?
Yes, after it has absorbed a serious impact, even if there is no visible damage. The shell and foam deform to absorb the shock; after an impact, they no longer protect in the same way.
Is a bicycle helmet suitable?
It is better than no helmet, but a skate helmet covers more of the back of the skull, where most board falls occur. Its shell is also designed to absorb repeated impacts.
What about children?
Use the same method: measure head circumference rather than choosing “a size to grow into.” Add knee and elbow pads, which greatly increase young riders’ confidence.
