Carver C7, C5 and CX trucks: choosing the right system for your surfskate

On a Carver surfskate, the choice of truck completely changes the board's handling. It determines how you pump, the flow of your turns, stability at higher speeds and how easily you initiate manoeuvres. The Carver range is built around three systems: C7 truck, C5 truck and CX truck, each with its own character, from beginner cruising to committed lines in a bowl.

Carver C7 truck: smooth, versatile surfing feel (beginner to expert)

The C7 truck is Carver's signature surfskate truck. It recreates a smooth surfing feel, with a tight turning radius and efficient pumping. It suits wide turns, surf-style practice and cruising sessions with little need to push.

It suits both beginners discovering surfskating and expert riders refining their lines. It is the most forgiving and versatile truck in the range. You can find it mounted on the C7 surfskates.

Carver C5 truck: freestyle and street riding for advanced riders

The C5 truck is intended for more freestyle and street-oriented riding. Narrower and lower than a C7, it brings a surfskate closer to the feel of a street skateboard while retaining the ability to pump for speed.

It is aimed at advanced to expert riders looking for more stability on jump landings, tight and lively turns, and handling suited to obstacles, curbs and skateparks. For riders coming from standard skateboarding, the C5 provides a direct transition. See the C5 surfskates.

Carver CX truck: responsive, powerful and at home in a bowl

The CX truck sits between a surfskate and a traditional skateboard truck. It retains strong pumping and carving ability, with a more direct response that works well in a bowl and for committed riding.

It is particularly suited to intermediate to expert riders: short, powerful turns, grip through curves and solid handling at higher speeds. See the CX surfskates.

Bushings, pads and wheels: fine-tuning your Carver truck

Your trucks do not work alone: bushings, pads and wheels complete a surfskate truck's behaviour. Bushings largely determine its flexibility: softer bushings make the board more manoeuvrable and tighten turns, while firmer bushings increase stability at higher speeds.

You can explore the different hardnesses in the bushings, and complete your setup with a set of wheels suited to your terrain.

When should you change the truck or the deck?

You do not always need to start again with a complete board. If your deck is in good condition but you want to change the board's handling, switching to C7, C5 or CX is often the most effective way to transform your surfskate.

Conversely, if you are happy with your truck system but want a longer, more compact or more surf-oriented feel, see the standalone decks. If you prefer not to assemble your board yourself, choose a complete surfskate.

How do you choose the right Carver truck for your profile?

To simplify the choice between C7, C5 and CX, use this logic:

You want a pure, very smooth surfing feel to work on your lines and style: choose the C7 truck.

You come from street skateboarding, like obstacles, jumps and tricks, but still want to pump for speed: look at the C5 truck.

You ride mostly in a bowl or park and want a lively, responsive surfskate that stays solid at higher speeds: the CX truck is often the best fit.

Carver trucks FAQ

Which Carver truck should beginners choose for surfskating?

For beginners, the C7 truck is generally the simplest and most reassuring choice. It delivers a smooth surfing feel, intuitive pumping and forgiving handling at low and medium speeds. You can progress with this system for a long time before needing to move to a more specific C5 or CX.

What is the difference between C7, C5 and CX trucks?

The C7 is the most versatile and surf-oriented, with a wide turning range and very smooth pumping. The C5 is more focused on freestyle and street, lower and narrower, for advanced to expert riders who want to perform tricks and technical lines in the park. The CX is the most responsive and most at home in a bowl, with handling between a skate truck and a surfskate truck.

Can I mount a Carver truck on a deck from another brand?

Yes, in most cases Carver trucks fit decks that use the same mounting hole spacing as standard skateboards. Check the hole pattern and the deck width against the trucks. Pads may be needed with large wheels to prevent wheelbite.

Do I need to change the bushings at the same time as my Carver trucks?

It is not mandatory, but it is often recommended. If you are fitting a new C7, C5 or CX truck and your bushings are worn, cracked or unsuitable for your build, replacing them is worthwhile. Properly selected bushings improve truck manoeuvrability and stability.
