Elbow and knee pads: what touches the ground first

In surfskate, the typical fall is a sideways slide: the board goes onto the rail and you land on a knee or elbow. These are the two areas that take the impact, and the two pads that most change how you approach a session.

Measure before buying

Protective gear is chosen by limb circumference, not clothing size: measure your thigh just above the knee for knee pads and your arm at the biceps for elbow pads. The size charts are listed on each product page.

A pad must stay in place when you bend your leg or arm. If it slips while walking, it will slip when you need it.

Hard shell or soft foam?

A hard shell slides over concrete and disperses impact: it suits the park, bowl and high-speed riding. Soft foam is more discreet and comfortable under clothing, suited to cruising and city riding.

Protective gear FAQ

Knee pads or wrist guards first?

If you are a beginner, wrist guards often come first: the natural reflex is to put your hands out. Knee pads become essential as soon as you ride transitions, where sliding out on your knees is the normal way to exit a module.

Can they be washed?

Most models have straps and foam pads that can be cleaned with lukewarm water and left to air-dry. Avoid tumble dryers and heat sources: the foam deforms and loses its ability to absorb impact.

Are complete sets available?

Yes, see the protective gear packs, which combine several pieces for a first set of protective gear.
